The tidal tail of stars, gas, and dust shows that this galaxy recently merged with another galaxy, which brought two supermassive black holes into this galaxy. A team of astronomers confirmed that the 2 bright nuclei near the center of the galaxy correspond to the two black holes, which are waltzing under the effects of gravity towards the galaxy.

Lee Smolin is author of "the fecund universes theory" of cosmology which suggests that the rules of biology apply on the grandest scales, and is often referred to as "cosmological natural selection". The theory surmises that a collapsing black hole causes the emergence of a new universe on the "other side".

Think black holes are strange? Understandable considering these powerhouses of the universe (many times heavier than our sun) are collapsed stars with gravity so strong that even light cannot escape their grasp.

People have become significant earth movers, outpacing all sources of natural erosion. Our footprint can be seen from space in many forms, including cities, reservoirs, agriculture and deforestation. Among the most impressive human scars on the planet are open-pit mines. Here are some of the biggest and most spectacular as seen from space.
