W Laboratorium CERN w Genewie trwają ostatnie przygotowania do ekstremalnych zderzeń protonów rozpędzanych w Wielkim Zderzaczu Hadronów LHC. Jeśli wszystko przebiegnie zgodnie z planem, to jutro tuż po godzinie dziewiątej rano można ...

The Large Hadron Collider is back up and running and already breaking records, with a 1.18-trillion-electron-volt beam. So what do the new numbers mean? Here's a primer on the electrons and proton beams, volts and megawatts, created and consumed by the world's most powerful proton accelerator.

Thousands of physicists around the world cheered as CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) smashed together subatomic particles at the highest energies ever reached by a human-made accelerator and the giant ATLAS detector observed the products of the record-breaking reactions whizzing through its sophisticated tracking devices.

With its first data from a particle collision, the Large Hadron Collider has "taken off safely"; one scientist says. But the trip isn't over yet - and higher-energy collisions could come before Christmas.

On Sunday CERN broke the world record for highest-energy proton smashing with its Large Hadron Collider. But that’s not all, folks. This underground proton racetrack, 17 miles in diameter, has racked up a whole list of superlatives — aside, of course, from biggest, most feared (to some), and most profound (to us) science experiment ever.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a complex piece of kit and the stuff it will discover could revolutionize our understanding of the universe. Mix cutting-edge physics with overly active imaginations and you get some crazy theories.

The Large Hadron Collider is by no means the last of the particle smashers. A group at CERN recently explored the various scenarios that might emerge from the atomic debris in Geneva – and how they would shape what colliders we build next. We draw out the key points about each of the scenarios.

Physicists hope to use the LHC to prove the existence of the Higgs boson, or God particle, which gives matter in the universe its mass. However, some are concerned that the LHC might actually end the world, by creating microscopic black holes or strangelets.

(NOT the Onion!) With freak accident after freak accident piling up over at CERN, the idea of time traveling particles returning from the future to prevent their own discovery is beginning to seem less and less far fetched.

Over the weekend, Cern ran particle beams through the Large Hadron Collider for the first time since it was shut down last September. After a helium leak caused magnets to overheat, operations at the LHC were suspended for cleanup and repairs. After tests on October 23 and 25, scientists hope to have the LHC running again in full by November.

The idea behind Felber's hypervelocity propulsion is grounded in the notion that the relativistic particle can provide a specific impulse even greater than its own motion through space. Felber also believes these otherworldly velocities could be reached without putting severe stresses on a spacecraft or those inside because the spacecraft follows
